Common problems that can affect your air handler include:
- Damaged blower — If the air filter isn’t replaced on a regular basis, debris can build up in the air handler and cause damage to the blower.

WHAT’S INSIDE THE AIR HANDLER?
The air handling unit is an essential part of your cooling system and features the following components:
- Blower — The blower is responsible for pulling in warm air and leading it towards the evaporator coil. The blower also works to ensure that cool air is efficiently circulated through your AC system.
- Evaporator coil — This is where the warm air is cooled before it is directed through the supply vents and into your home. The evaporator coil can become frozen due to a clogged air filter, low refrigerant, or restricted airflow.
- Air filter — The air filter is responsible for keeping dust, dirt, and other debris from accumulating inside the air handling unit. Regular filter replacement is a crucial part of AC maintenance, and should be carried out every two or three months.
LOOKING TO JUST REPLACE THE AIR HANDLER?
We often get questions from homeowners about simply replacing their air handler, while keeping the current outdoor unit. While this may seem more cost-effective than changing both indoor and outdoor units, it’s actually not a practical long-term solution.
According to industry standards, both the indoor air handler and the outdoor compressor are required to have matching coils, refrigerant, and SEER ratings. If you opt to replace just the air handler, the new unit will likely have a higher SEER rating than the existing outdoor unit. This imbalance will result in recurring cooling problems and premature system failure.
